Next Election: Edo Governorship Elections-21st September 2024

CVR: Over two Hundred Thousand Eligible Voters Registered in Edo and Ondo – INEC Chairman

“We have done the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercises in the two states of Edo and Ondo, and in each state over hundred 100,000 eligible Nigerians were registered.”

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, made the disclosure today (29/6/2016) at the INEC headquarters in Abuja during the Commission’s second quarterly meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) ahead of the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo.

He said the next step to be taken by the Commission would be to do a de-duplication exercise, to ensure that there were no multiple registrants, and that, INEC would print the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and distribute them ahead of the elections in the two states. The Edo state governorship election is scheduled for Saturday, 10th September 2016 while the Ondo governorship election is scheduled for Saturday, 26th November 2016.

Professor Yakubu explained that the meeting, among others would discuss the preparations of for the forth coming governorship elections and the conclusion of the re-run elections in Rivers, Imo, and Kano and Kogi states.

On the conduct of the rerun elections in the four states, the INEC Chairman further explained that the meeting was also part of on-going consultations with stakeholders which would be concluded tomorrow with a National Stakeholders Forum, where the exact dates for the rerun elections in the aforementioned states would be announced (to be concluded not later than 31stof July, 2016).

“We have started the processes of consultation which will lead to the final determination of the exact dates not later than the 31st of July, 2016 for the conclusion of the elections in the four states. Yesterday we met with the security agencies. Today it is the turn of the RECs and then tomorrow we will have the National Stakeholders’ Forum involving the Political Parties, the candidates involved in the elections, the Security Agencies, the RECs, the Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and the Media”, he said.
